By Robin Gibson The life of man is of no greater importance to the universe than that of an oyster. -- David Hume  Scottish philosopher David Hume was right when it comes to the oyster's popularity in the Lowcountry. Winter brings with it the time-honored tradition of communal gatherings centered around the shellfish known as The Oyster Roast. This ritual is as iconic to the region as the smell of pluff mud is to our noses. And for the 34th year, the Granddaddy of them all, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival sponsored by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association took place January 27, 2017, at Boone Hall Plantation. From the tailgating atmosphere to the dedicated shell recycling, these pictures tell the story of an ardent love affair and obsession with the all-important oyster. Shell recycling is an important part of the oyster's life cycle. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources manages a shell recycling program whereby shells are reintroduced to salt water to improve the natural habitat. As we mark the passage of time by welcoming yet another year, it is important to remember that life is meant to be lived as long we're breathing. The new Adidas commercial going viral is poignant for many reasons. First, it was directed by a student showing us all that brilliance and creativity sometimes rests in the young. And, second, the protagonist is a senior who feels his spirit slipping through his fingers until his former love of running is fueled by a pair of old running shoes. The lesson is this: never let your circumstance, to the extent you have control, limit your potential. Resolve in this brand new year to live life to the fullest regardless of age. Do everything in your power to live Life Out Loud in 2017. The Lowcountry is a wonderful place to be this time of year as we welcome sunsine and mild temps to our region. Wishing everyone peace, love and prosperity. And may we all discover the best is yet to come. Happy New Year, everyone!
By Robin Gibson The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper. -- William Butler Yeats Kellar O'Neil, aka "The Southern Charmer" and "Mystifier of the Finest Affairs", is a magician and storyteller who has perfected the art of illusion with a devilish grin. Recently, he invited us to check out his show at The Palmetto Crescent Parlour, and we were delighted to take him up on the offer. Tucked away in a corner of Charleston, he performs in an intimate setting thus ensuring audience engagement. Our pictures offer a glimpse of the evening, and what one can expect from a magical night on the town.  At the suggestion of our host, we began our evening across the street from the venue at Le Farfalle, 15 Beaufain Street.  As dusk began to fall, we were escorted from Le Farfalle to The Palmetto Crescent Parlour by gas lantern.  The first glimpse of our handsome host and consumate showman, the incomparable Kellar O'Neill.  Inside The Palmetto Crescent Parlour, Mr. O'Neill incorporates tales of family and travel with historical photos and antiques.  The performance is very hands on with the audience participating or engaging somehow in most, if not all, of the illusions.  Sitting in the front row is a virtual guarantee that you will be part of the show. Consider this image of me as proof.  Mr. O'Neill even has a furry friend who proves to be a highlight and crowd favorite of the performance that evening.  We ended our night back at Le Farfalle where the bartender was eager to make us a cocktail and talk about the show. Folks looking for a fun evening out should consider The Palmetto Crescent Parlour. This family-friendly show (minimum age 10) is unlike anything else in Charleston. Each performance lasts 75 minutes with a reception of light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages beginning 15 minutes prior. Group packages and private events are available.
